Pigment Failure Doesn’t Care About Brand or Color: Why You Should Test Every Surface — Every Time

If you’ve been in this industry long enough, you’ve seen it:
You spray what looks like a safe house — neutral colors, good paint, reputable brand — and by the time it dries?
🎯 The trim has streaks.
🎯 The siding has blotches.
🎯 The whole job now needs a paintbrush instead of a rinse nozzle.
Here’s the truth every soft washer needs to hear:Pigment failure doesn’t care what color the house is. Or what brand the paint is. Or what grade it claims to be.
It Can Happen to Any Paint — Any Color
I’ve seen pigment failure in:
Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint
Behr Premium Plus
PPG ProLuxe
Even high-end, contractor-only blends
And not just on red or burgundy.I’ve seen pigment breakdown on:
Tan
Gray
Olive
Deep blues
Even bright whites
That’s why we don’t assume.We test.
Test Everything — Not Just the Main Wall
A lot of guys will test one panel on the side of the house and call it good.
But what about:
The trim?
The garage door?
The shutters?
The back wall that was painted last year with a different brand?
That DIY-painted fence on the side?
⚠️ Different paints = different pigments = different reactions.
It takes 3 minutes to test… and it could save you a 3-day repaint.
My Rule: If It Has Color, It Gets a Test
Doesn’t matter what it looks like. Doesn’t matter if the homeowner says “Oh, it was painted last year — it’s fine. ”You test anyway.
Why? Because when that pigment fails, it’s your name and your insurance on the line — not theirs.
